Interested by how Apple maintains a high design standard in its UI across the world, I began studying Apple's Right to left guidelines and the WWDC22 talk on building global apps: Localization by example.

To put my learning into practice: I designed a pricing card you might see on Apple's online store and reproduced across 6 different countries. Arabic mirrors from the same component, and each script gets its own type settings. Prices, dates and digits come straight from the browser, so Indian lakh grouping and Japan's era year cost nothing extra.

The biggest fundamental changes were in how people pay: instalments lead in Brazil, UPI takes the express slot in India, and cash vouchers in Mexico and Japan might share a pay in store sheet.

I built the final, interactive design in Figma and Claude Code. Tap the countries below to see the visual impact.

Bank transaction IDs have historically been messy. Challenger banks like Monzo cleaned this up with the user in mind. But transactions between third-parties like Paypal and Square still block users from seeing exactly who they bought from.

Even with predictable recurring transactions (like subscriptions), when done through a third-party, make me panic as I'm not able to quickly identify what the payment relates to.

This imagines that users got control with a built in AI that could read the hidden details that come with every card payment (business type, location, the seller behind PayPal or Square), checks them against known merchant records and business directories, to suggests the most likely match for you to confirm.

I spent much of my iteration time (and credits lol) on designing and refining the most rewarding reveal. For example, Claude originally produced an animation for the new transaction name that was super fast. But even for this small experiment, I iterated on this by requesting more 'effort' be expressed, and a slower animation period be forced since humans use time taken as a proxy for effort and thus trust the outcome more (no matter how efficient the underlying technology).

“Justin is one of the most considered designers I've worked with. Every decision was intentional and held to a high standard. It would be a pleasure to work with him again.”
